This is the largest of the various delta works built to protect the Netherlands from flooding during storms in the north sea. The dam consists of sluices which allow regular tidal movement, and only close during a storm which threatens to overwhelm the dikes further inland.

Taken from the observation deck of the Euromast, the main observation tower in Rotterdam. It’s tiny compared to the CN Tower, but the view was nonetheless spectacular.
